IPA/BC Monitor (POR-FESR 2014-2020)

IPA/BC monitor is the solution for monitoring particulate matter (PM) emitted from traffic sources and household heating in urban environments, with a focus on priority micro pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, "€œPAHs"€, or "€œIPA"€ according to the Italian acronym) and climate forcers (black carbon, "BC"€). By means of micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and other highly automatized solutions, IPA/BC-Monitor overcomes the typical problems of encumbrance and costs of offline chemical measurements of particulate matter, and includes a BC monitor integrated with a miniaturized gas chromatographic system for PAH analysis in PM

Air pollution represents one of the main risk factors for human health. Black carbon (BC) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the chemical compounds of Particulate Matter (PM) evidently responsible of harmful effects on the population (World Health Organization, 2012). Moreover, BC is also an accountable compound for climate change and global warming (IPCC, 2013). Both BC and PAHs are released from the most common combustion sources (vehicular traffic, domestic heating) that characterize the main hot spots of atmospheric pollution in urban environment. Besides the effects on health and climate, air quality worsening restricts the use of public places (eg.: green areas and cycle lanes). IPA-BC Monitor projects aims at developing an innovative, compact and stand-alone system capable to measure on-line BC and PAHs by means of gas-chromatographic technique. The target of the device is its implementation into urban monitoring networks, thus overcoming the constraints of PAHs analysis with conventional methodologies (very high costs for sampling and off-line lab analysis). The considerable shortening of the time lapse between sampling and analysis also allows the real-time transmission of air quality data to local administration and citizenship. The device will be therefore equipped with a smart control system, capable to manage data and to provide simple indexes of air quality. They will be used to support public administrations in the adoption of the so-called win-win strategies, aimed at improving air quality and mitigating climate changes.
