AviEcoTec (PSR 2023-2027)
AviEcoTec - Technologies to reduce ammonia, dust, and odor emissions in poultry farming is a PSER 2023-2027 project coordinated by CRPA - Centro Ricerca Produzioni Animali, and funded by European FEASR funds from the Emilia-Romagna Region.
Objectives
The AviEcoTec Operational Group aims to identify and test solutions that can reduce the environmental impact on air quality in the regional poultry farming sector, while maintaining or, if possible, increasing production levels. Specifically, the plan sets the following objectives:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of innovative techniques in regional poultry farms for reducing ammonia, dust, and odor emissions, through an abatement system operating on the air extracted from the poultry houses, called a "calm chamber" or "dust chamber";
- To integrate and implement the "calm chamber" technology with abatement systems;
- To quantify the reduction in emissions achievable by applying the techniques in different operating conditions;
- To evaluate the technique as potential BAT (Best Available Techniques);
- To identify the operating procedures that allow the best results;
- To provide results useful for companies to assess the suitability and effectiveness of the technique in specific operational management conditions.
Expected results
The actions undertaken by the AVIECOTEC Operational Group will lead to the validation of innovative techniques for the abatement of ammonia, dust, and odors in the air extracted from poultry farms, resulting in a reduction in pollutant releases and improvement of air quality. Specifically, the following concrete results are expected from the project actions:
- Quantification of the reduction in ammonia emissions achievable with the "calm chamber" technology in the different operating configurations foreseen by the project (Action 1);
- Quantification of the reduction in particulate matter emissions achievable with the "calm chamber" technology in the different operating configurations foreseen by the project (Action 2);
- Quantification of the reduction in odor emissions achievable with the "calm chamber" technology in the different operating configurations (Action 3);
- Implementation of the technique and identification of the best operating procedures for managing the "calm chamber" for each of the two monitored farms;
- Information and experimental results, obtained under real-scale operating conditions, which can be useful to quantify the effectiveness of the technique in reducing impacts;
- Environmental sustainability and cost-benefit assessments on the introduction of the technique in poultry farming (Action 4);
- Demonstration and awareness-raising, with respect to the stakeholders of the sector, that the innovations developed by the GOI can increase the environmental and social sustainability of poultry production.
PROAMBIENTE activities
As part of the project, Proambiente will be responsible for:
1) Developing the monitoring protocol to be followed during the field testing phase;
2) Designing, developing, and testing the measurement system for monitoring particulate matter (PM) concentration in farms.
