Detection of fugitive methane emissions

WHY MONITOR FUGITIVE METHANE (CH₄) EMISSIONS

Fugitive emissions from biomethane, biogas (typically containing more than 50% methane) and natural gas (80–98% methane) represent both an environmental and economic challenge. Methane is a high-impact greenhouse gas (GHG), and undetected leaks reduce plant efficiency, increase operational costs and compromise overall environmental performance.

Effective monitoring requires technologies capable of detecting, locating and quantifying emissions in real time and continuously, across large areas, without interfering with normal plant operations.

WHAT PROAMBIENTE DOES

PROAMBIENTE provides a fugitive methane emissions detection service based on TD-LIDAR technology (Tunable Diode Laser LIDAR), a remote sensing system capable of continuous, real-time monitoring over extended areas of up to 250 m radius.

The service enables:

  • identification of emission sources
  • 3D localization of methane leaks
  • quantification of the CH₄ emission rate

Monitoring is performed through a single fixed installation, without requiring direct access to critical points of the facility.

Collected data are accessible via a cloud-based platform, enabling historical data analysis and operational decision support.

TD-LIDAR TECHNOLOGY

The TD-LIDAR system integrates multiple advanced optical measurement techniques, including:

  • Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS)
  • Differential Absorption LIDAR (DIAL)
  • Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC)

A Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) emits infrared radiation modulated at methane-specific absorption wavelengths. By analysing the return signal, the system measures CH₄ concentration along the laser path and reconstructs, in real time, the location and intensity of methane emissions.

This configuration provides:

  • objective leak detection and quantification
  • high spatial resolution
  • continuous 24/7 operation
  • reliable performance under different meteorological conditions
