For this reason, the recovery of primary resources (first of all water resource, but also excess sludge and nutrient elements contained in wastewater) is mostly unused, as well as the enhancement and energy efficiency (the purification of municipal wastewater only accounts about 2.2% of the entire National energy bill).
Public and industrial wastewater management typically follows an end-of-pipe-logic, whose main goal is the compliance with the thresholds for treated effluent drain and sludge disposal. Consequently, the recovery potential of primary resources (water, sludge and nutritious elements contained in the effluents), valorisation and energy efficiency is mostly unexploited.
At the same time, the effects of climate changes (especially drought phenomena) are clear in the Emilia Romagna Region, due to its geographical morphology, which makes it vulnerable to water scarcity events. Such phenomena, joined with the high levels of contamination of superficial and underground waters, make evident the need for non-conventional water resources, i.e. one of the main goals of VALUE DE-IN Project.
The Project target is the implementation of circular economy approaches to the supply chain of public and industrial wastewater management, improving the environmental sustainability.
