Ammonia and methane monitoring in livestock farming

WHY MONITOR EMISSIONS IN LIVESTOCK FARMING

Livestock farming is a key economic activity, but it is also a significant source of ammonia (NH₃) and methane (CH₄) emissions. Ammonia is a precursor of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), while methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG). These emissions affect air quality, climate impact and animal welfare conditions.

Continuous monitoring of these gas concentrations makes it possible to better understand emission dynamics and support the implementation of effective mitigation strategies.

WHAT PROAMBIENTE DOES

PROAMBIENTE provides a continuous, real-time monitoring service for methane (CH₄) and ammonia (NH₃) concentrations in livestock farming environments, based on TDLAS optical technology (Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy).

The system enables:

  • reliable and stable measurement of gas concentrations over time
  • analysis of daily and seasonal emission patterns
  • support for assessing the effectiveness of implemented mitigation practices

MONITORING TECHNOLOGY

The service uses portable monitoring stations specifically designed for livestock environments, integrating:

  • TDLAS optical sensors for CH₄ and NH₃
  • active air sampling system
  • particulate filtration unit to protect the measurement cell
  • embedded data acquisition and storage unit

The stations are compact, easy to install, and transmit data via GSM or Wi-Fi to a cloud-based platform, enabling real-time data access and historical trend analysis.

Compared with conventional reference instrumentation for outdoor NH₃ and CH₄ monitoring, the system provides a practical and cost-effective operational solution.
