Computer Vision and Machine Learning for Environmental Monitoring (R&D)

In indoor environments, the number of occupants directly affects several Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) parameters, particularly CO₂, humidity, and indirectly PM and VOCs. Estimating occupancy in real time allows for a better interpretation of environmental data, helps assess exposure risks, and enables more effective ventilation strategies.

Internal research activity at PROAMBIENTE, aimed at the prototyping, validation, and development of new technological solutions.

Computer Vision and Machine Learning for Environmental Monitoring (R&D)

WHAT PROAMBIENTE DOES

PROAMBIENTE has developed an integrated experimental system based on computer vision and IAQ sensors for real-time monitoring of occupancy and indoor air quality. The goal is to support ventilation strategies (manual or automated) aligned with the actual use of spaces, improving both indoor health and energy management.

HOW IT WORKS (TECHNOLOGY)

The system is designed to operate in edge computing and integrates:

  • Raspberry Pi (edge computer) + camera
  • A state-of-the-art object detection model (e.g. YOLO), internally trained
  • Models based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs)
  • Integration with air quality sensors (CO₂, relative humidity, PM, VOCs, etc.)
  • Privacy by design: no personal data is stored; only real-time processing and people counting output

WHAT YOU GET

  • Reliable real-time occupancy estimation (people counting)
  • More robust interpretation of IAQ data based on space usage
  • Support for rapid decision-making (e.g. window/HVAC management) and data-driven ventilation strategies
  • Dashboard for visualization and analysis (currently under development)

CASE STUDY

In an office test during working hours, the model achieved approximately 98% accuracy in detecting and counting people under real conditions. A strong correlation was observed between occupancy and CO₂ levels, often exceeding 700 ppm during peak occupancy periods.

APPLICATION AREAS

  • Offices and workspaces
  • Schools, classrooms, and educational environments
  • Meeting rooms and indoor public spaces
  • Buildings with HVAC systems requiring IAQ and energy optimization
